Miss Mayhem Rules — Darius Lamar Brown

“Miss Mayhem Rules” is a sly, affectionate portrait of life with an irresistible presence who has quietly taken command of the household. At first, she seems simply impossible to understand: demanding attention before changing her mind, claiming the best chair and bed, making late-night demands and regarding every inconvenience as somebody else’s failure. Gradually, however, the clues reveal exactly who is really in charge.

The lyric finds warmth and humour in the familiar rituals of surrendering to a strong-willed cat, from rejected breakfasts and indecision at the door to the calculated tumble of an object from a windowsill. Beneath the amusement is genuine affection: by the end, the narrator readily admits that he is wrapped around one little velvet paw.

A slinky R&B/soul-pop groove gives the song an easy, sophisticated swagger. Deep electric bass, tight live drums, Rhodes, clipped clean guitar and subtle Hammond create a warm analogue foundation, punctuated by brass and instrumental replies. Darius Lamar Brown delivers the verses with a rich, conversational tenor and knowing restraint, opening naturally into controlled melodic choruses. Stylish, playful and warmly observed, “Miss Mayhem Rules” celebrates the peculiar pleasure of knowing who really runs the house.
