One More Night at the Flamingo
Latin disco, disco soul, Latin soul; brass and Latin percussion
One More Night at the Flamingo is an exuberant celebration of music, memory and the wonderful realisation that growing older doesn't mean leaving the joy of living behind.
Darius Lamar Brown takes us into the Flamingo Room, a glamorous nightclub where red velvet curtains, a shining dance floor and a pink neon flamingo welcome the Saturday-night crowd. Then Carmen walks through the door. Twenty years have passed, but the music still knows her, and so does the band.
What follows is a colourful, affectionate story of confidence, humour and rediscovery. When a younger dancer offers Carmen his hand, he quickly discovers that she remembers a few moves of her own. Soon the tables are emptying, the dance floor is filling, and an entire room is celebrating alongside her.
Driven by infectious Latin percussion, funky electric bass, bright piano, sweeping strings and spectacular brass, the arrangement combines disco energy with soulful storytelling. Darius's expressive tenor brings warmth and theatrical personality, including spontaneous shouted exchanges that make the nightclub atmosphere come alive.
Beneath all the excitement lies a simple, moving truth: Carmen hasn't returned to reclaim her youth or prove anything to anyone. She's simply come home to the music she loves.
A joyous reminder that some fires never die.
Lyrics
Down on the corner, where the city glows
There's a little old club everybody knows
Red velvet curtains, a shining floor
And a pink neon bird above the door
The band was cooking, the room was alive
Saturday night, a quarter to five
Then the doorman smiled, stepped out of the way
And somebody whispered, "Well, look who's here today"
Carmen walked in with her head held high
Silver in her hair and a sparkle in her eye
Twenty years gone, but she knew that room
Every little corner, every sweet perfume
She looked at the band, and the piano man grinned
Played a little melody from way back when
She laughed and turned, like she knew the tune
And the whole place felt like a Saturday in June
HEY! CARMEN! IS THAT YOU
She didn't come to turn back time
Didn't need to prove a thing
Just heard that rhythm calling
And it made her want to swing
One more night at the Flamingo
Let the whole room come alive
When Carmen steps onto that dance floor
You can feel the music rise
One more night at the Flamingo
Let the trumpets touch the sky
Some things never lose their magic
Some fires never die
A young man smiled and offered his hand
Said, "Lady, you still remember this dance"
She raised one eyebrow, gave him a grin
Said, "Honey, I was dancing before you walked in"
He took one step, she took three
Turned him around so gracefully
The bandleader laughed, gave the boys a sign
And the rhythm section kicked into double time
Now the tables emptied, the glasses stood
Every single dancer understood
Wasn't about the years gone by
It was the fire still shining in her eyes
One more night at the Flamingo
Let the whole room come alive
When Carmen steps onto that dance floor
You can feel the music rise
One more night at the Flamingo
Let the trumpets touch the sky
Some things never lose their magic
Some fires never die
COME ON, CARMEN! SHOW 'EM
And somewhere in the middle of that night
Underneath those coloured lights
Carmen closed her eyes and smiled
Like she hadn't missed a mile
Not a queen upon a throne
Just a woman coming home
And every heart around that floor
Knew what they were dancing for
One more night at the Flamingo
Let the whole room come alive
When Carmen steps onto that dance floor
You can feel the music rise
One more night at the Flamingo
Let the trumpets touch the sky
Some things never lose their magic
Some fires never die
Oh, Carmen
Look at you now
Keep on dancing
Yeah... all night long
