The Hours Between Tomorrow — Zane Mercer
The Hours Between Tomorrow invites us into a world where clocks run backwards, rivers flow uphill and yesterday seems no more certain than tomorrow.
A chance encounter at a railway station begins a gently surreal journey through impossible landscapes and curious conversations. A woman sells dreams for half a crown, a house stands without a doorway, and a familiar shadow appears to possess memories of its own. Beneath the playful imagery lies a quieter reflection on time, identity and the strange persistence of things we thought we had forgotten.
Musically, Zane Mercer explores the wonderfully distinctive Canterbury Sound, the British progressive-rock tradition that flourished in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Associated with groups such as Caravan and Soft Machine, the style combines psychedelic atmosphere, jazz-influenced improvisation, melodic invention and an unmistakably English sense of eccentricity.
Here, the Hammond A-100 takes centre stage, its expressive melodies and swirling Leslie textures unfolding alongside Mellotron strings, delicate electric piano, wandering bass and shimmering guitar. Vintage Copicat echoes lend additional character to the expansive instrumental passages.
Zane's intimate, understated vocals sit naturally within the arrangement, allowing the music to wander freely between lyrical observations.
Dreamlike, gently mysterious and richly atmospheric, The Hours Between Tomorrow celebrates a musical tradition in which imagination matters more than convention.
