The Hungry Ghost — Darius Lamar Brown
The Hungry Ghost is a dark, searching contemporary soul/R&B piece about the endless appetite for more — more possessions, more experiences, more achievement, and another destination beyond whatever has already been attained. Its narrator has spent a lifetime mistaking that restlessness for hunger and drive, never recognising the source of the dissatisfaction following him.
The title draws upon the ancient idea of the hungry ghost: a spirit characterised by craving that cannot be satisfied. The tradition remains part of annual observances across Chinese Buddhist, Taoist and folk communities during the seventh lunar month, often known as Ghost Month. Hungry Ghost or Yu Lan festivals honour ancestors and wandering spirits through offerings of food, incense and other rituals — traditions that have endured for generations.
The song turns that supernatural image inward. A mysterious encounter forces the narrator to question the presence he believes has pursued him throughout his life. Eventually he recognises his own coat, his own face and his own hunger: the ghost he has tried to outrun is himself.
A hypnotic pulse, deep bass, dark Rhodes, sparse piano, muted guitar, organ, low strings and an eerie recurring three-note motif carry Darius Lamar Brown from close, controlled intimacy into ringing upper-register intensity. As the arrangement finally recedes, so does the pursuit. After a lifetime of reaching for the next thing, he arrives at the simplest revelation of all: for the first time, he is not hungry.

The Hungry Ghost — Darius Lamar Brown
I have always had an appetite
For things I couldn't keep
A little more to make me whole
A little less to sleep
One more room with brighter lights
One more hand to play
I could hold the whole world in my arms
And still look past it anyway
There was always something calling
From the other side of enough
Every time I thought I'd found it
I discovered something else to want
I called it hunger
I called it drive
I called it anything
That kept the wanting alive
There's a hungry ghost behind me
I can feel him when I run
Always reaching for tomorrow
Before today is done
Give him gold, he'll ask for diamonds
Give him love, he'll ask for more
There's a hungry ghost behind me
And he's always at my door
Then I met you in the half-light
Where the city lost its name
You looked at me a little longer
Than people usually dare
You said, "Some men chase their fortune
Some men only chase the chase
You can cross a thousand borders
And take yourself to every place"
I laughed and asked you what you wanted
You said, "Nothing you can buy"
Then that strange old sound came through the room
And something moved behind your eyes
You called it hunger
Older than desire
A mouth that drinks an ocean
And comes back asking for the fire
There's a hungry ghost behind me
Getting closer every night
I can feel him in the silence
When I turn out every light
Give him money, give him pleasure
Give him everything I know
There's a hungry ghost behind me
And he never lets me go
I went looking for you yesterday
No one knew your name
No one at the doorway
Could remember when you came
I walked back through the city
With your words inside my head
And every window held a stranger
Who moved exactly when I did
I stopped beneath a broken light
And watched him standing there
He wore my coat
He wore my face
He had my hunger in his stare
All my life I heard him breathing
All my life I felt him near
I thought if I kept moving
I could leave him somewhere here
But you cannot outrun a shadow
When the light is at your back
And you cannot feed a hunger
That is made from what you lack
No more running
No more chase
No more searching
For another place
Let me stand here
Let me see
What was always part of me
There is no hungry ghost behind me
There never was
There never was
I was reaching through the darkness
I was the one who wanted more
Every gift became a question
Every answer left me poor
I kept hearing someone knocking
But I was standing at the door
I am the hungry ghost
I am the hungry ghost
All this time I thought he followed
But the footsteps were my own
I don't know who you were
Or why you knew
But tonight
For the first time
I am not hungry
