The Singing Ferry — Bobby Knight
“The Singing Ferry” follows a remembered river song across the distance of a lifetime. Bobby Knight sings of morning water, voices carried on the breeze, and a childhood encounter with music whose meaning deepens as the years pass. Other rivers, changing seasons and unfamiliar places cannot displace that first sound. Its return offers a fleeting reunion with faces that time has taken beyond reach.
A deep, gravelly bass-baritone gives the story its intimate centre, answered by a large male choir in overlapping chants and rich harmonies. Resonant steel footstamps and a rounded kick establish a shared human pulse, while rolling bass and interlocking African percussion carry the music forward. Low-register acoustic guitar, short-decay piano and subtle Hammond bring warmth; strings gradually widen the emotional horizon.
The arrangement builds with the force of gathering voices, then opens into a quiet passage for piano, restrained strings and the solitary lead. From that stillness, unaccompanied choral harmonies prepare an exhilarating return of rhythm and full ensemble.
Rooted in choral Afro-soul, the song holds longing and celebration together. Its repeated plea to be brought home becomes a moment of belonging, sustained by voices that remain vividly present even as the final instruments fall away.
