What We Leave Standing brings Parichad’s contemplative cinematic soul together with photographs and video filmed by Peter Pickering at Sala Keoku in Nong Khai, Thailand, on 22 August 2026. Begun around 1978 under the direction of Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat after he moved from neighbouring Laos, Sala Keoku is an extraordinary landscape of monumental concrete sculpture drawing upon Buddhist and Hindu imagery and Sulilat’s distinctive spiritual vision.
Against this setting, the song asks what remains when the hands that created something are gone. Its sparse lyric moves from the disappearance of the maker to the persistence of what was made: marks left in time, stone that remembers nothing, and a dream that may somehow outlast its dreamer.
Parichad delivers the words in a close, smoky mezzo-soprano, beginning low and conversational before gradually reaching upward. Wordless phrases drift through warm resonant piano, deep bass, cello, sustained strings, Rhodes and restrained percussion.
Moving at an unhurried tempo, the arrangement leaves generous space around both voice and imagery. Music, sculpture and photography ultimately converge on the same unanswered question: when our own time has passed, what do we leave standing?
