When Machines Had Souls — Bobby Knight

When Machines Had Souls looks back to a world in which machinery bore the unmistakable imprint of the people who designed, built, maintained and trusted it. The song is less a celebration of machines themselves than of the men behind them: people who drew lines on paper, fashioned components, tightened fittings, understood an engine by its sound and passed hard-won knowledge from one pair of hands to another.

Against Peter Pickering’s photography of engines, controls, gauges, riveted metal and mechanical detail, the lyric follows those human traces into the present. Silent engines and sleeping instruments become reminders of workmanship that remains visible long after the hands responsible for it have gone. Its recurring image of the firing stroke as a heartbeat gives the title its central metaphor: something of the maker survives in the thing that was made.

Bobby Knight delivers the story in a husky, gravel-textured tenor-baritone, moving from intimate reflection towards increasingly impassioned choruses. Resonant piano, warm bass, restrained drums, muted guitar, strings, cello, French horn and touches of flugelhorn create a cinematic orchestral-soul setting with a measured mechanical pulse.
