You Only Call When You Need Me — Darius Lamar Brown
You Only Call When You Need Me lives in the difficult space between a love that has ended and a connection that has never completely disappeared. He knows something is wrong before she tells him. He recognises the change in her voice, answers when she needs him and offers the comfort she still instinctively seeks — while knowing he cannot become what he once was to her.
The song refuses an easy villain. There is affection on both sides, but also an unspoken question whenever she moves a little closer or reaches for his hand. He admits that something remains inside him, yet he has built another life. His challenge is not learning how to stop caring, but learning where caring must end.
Musically, the track combines contemporary cinematic soul-pop with sophisticated R&B. Warm piano and Rhodes, melodic bass, organic drums, restrained guitar, atmospheric textures and elegant strings create an increasingly expansive setting for Darius Lamar Brown’s expressive tenor. Intimate, conversational verses build through mounting pre-choruses into soaring, emotionally charged choruses.
Bittersweet rather than despairing, You Only Call When You Need Me ultimately reaches a mature understanding: sometimes love survives by changing its shape — remaining present when someone needs you while still knowing when to walk away.

I know before you tell me
Something's weighing on your mind
There's a change in how you say hello
I've heard a thousand times
You don't have to give me reasons
You don't have to make it clear
If the night has turned against you
You know I'll still be here
But there's a place we used to go
I can't go back there anymore
So I listen like a friend should
And leave the past outside the door
You only call when you need me
And you know I'll always come
I can hold you when you're hurting
I just can't be what I was
There's a line I have to walk now
Between kindness and goodbye
You only call when you need me
And I never ask you why
Sometimes you sit a little closer
Than a friend would need to be
Sometimes there's a question in your eyes
You never ask of me
And I'd be lying if I told you
There was nothing left inside
But I've built another life now
And there's more than us in mind
So when your hand reaches for mine
I don't pull away too fast
But I won't let one lonely evening
Make a future from the past
You only call when you need me
And you know I'll always come
I can hold you when you're hurting
I just can't be what I was
There's a line I have to walk now
Between kindness and goodbye
You only call when you need me
And I never ask you why
There was a time I'd have mistaken
Every midnight call for fate
I'd have heard the words you didn't say
And stayed a little late
But loving you is different now
It doesn't ask you to be mine
Sometimes love is being there
And knowing where to draw the line
If you need me, I'll be there
You already know that's true
But being there when you need me
Doesn't mean I'm coming back to you
You only call when you need me
And you know I'll always come
I'll be steady when you're shaking
Till the worst of it is done
And if I leave a little sooner
It's not because I don't still care
You only call when you need me
And I'll always meet you there
Maybe some love doesn't leave us
It just learns a different way
To be there when somebody needs you
And still know when to walk away
