It’s difficult to imagine now, but one of the most famous songs ever written was once considered a risk.
When Paul McCartney introduced Yesterday in 1965, it sounded nothing like the Beatles’ recent hits. There were no drums. No electric guitars. Just Paul’s voice, an acoustic guitar, and a string quartet.
It was such a departure from the band’s established sound that there were genuine concerns about how audiences would respond. Some questioned whether it should even be released as a Beatles recording.
Thankfully, those doubts didn’t prevail.
Released in 1965, Yesterday became one of the most recorded songs in history, with thousands of artists interpreting it in their own style over the decades.
It serves as a gentle reminder that sometimes the boldest creative step isn’t making more noise.
It’s having the confidence to do something quieter.
