“Sessions on the Green”, where did the name actually come from? Many have asked.

Long before it became a registered name, or even a serious business idea, I simply imagined bringing musicians and creative people together for relaxed musical sessions. Not formal studio work necessarily — more the spirit of people gathering together, sharing ideas, stories, atmosphere and music.

I always liked the word “sessions” because it felt collaborative and human rather than commercial.

The “on the green” part came from a few places.

One of them was an outdoor Lionel Richie concert I attended at Sandalford Wines in the Swan Valley, just north of Perth, back in December 2007 as part of the “A Day on the Green” concerts.

I still remember the atmosphere of that evening — open air, people relaxed on the grass, warm night air, music drifting through the crowd beneath the trees.

Lionel Richie was extraordinary live. A true performer. And Marcia Hines, who also performed that night, genuinely surprised me with how powerful and soulful she was in person.

That evening stayed with me.

But there was another influence too.

Behind my home in Perth was a beautiful green space with mature trees, including a golden chandelier tree that would hang with long flowing yellow flowers. In the early days, before Sessions on the Green truly existed, I imagined artists gathering there informally for music, conversation and creativity beneath the trees.

As the project evolved, it gradually became more studio-focused rather than live-performance based, but the spirit behind the name never really changed.

Even now, to me, Sessions on the Green still feels less like a company name and more like an atmosphere.

A place where music, memory, people and emotion quietly come together.
